Reformer vs Mat Pilates: Which Should You Try First?
If you're new to Pilates, the first question is usually whether to book reformer or mat.
Either works for a beginner. The difference is how each one adds resistance, and how much your instructor can adjust it around you.
What's the difference between reformer and mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates happens on the floor. Your body weight is the resistance, sometimes with a band, ring or ball, and your instructor cues your alignment and control.
Reformer Pilates uses a piece of equipment called a reformer. A sliding platform, called the carriage, moves along a frame against a set of springs. You push or pull it with your feet on the footbar or with your hands in the straps, and the springs add the resistance.
On the mat, your muscles control your own weight. On the reformer, the springs change the load.
Is one easier to start with?
Neither is the beginner version or the advanced version.
Reformer classes can appear more complicated because of the springs and straps, and they can take a class or two to get used to. Once you know them, they make the exercises adjustable. The same movement can be made easier or harder, so you can work at a level that suits you.
Mat has no springs to adjust, so the exercise is changed through position and range of movement, or by adding a prop instead.
If you're starting with very little exercise behind you, we always suggest a mat Pilates class to start. If you're really keen on trying the reformer they are still appropriate for the complete beginner.
How do you choose which to book first?
In either format, Align is our foundational class. It's built around technique, control and learning to move well before adding load. Flow classes are the next step, with progressive challenge and more dynamic movement.
If you'd like to learn the reformer with other beginners, our 4-week Beginner Reformer Course is designed for that. It runs in set blocks, so check the course page for the next intake.
Not sure which class suits you? Our quick quiz down the bottom of this page can point you to one.
Can you try both before you decide?
Yes. Our intro offer is 4 classes for $89, to use over 14 days, for new clients. You can choose mat, reformer or a mix, so you can compare the two in the same fortnight. Book the offer, then choose your classes from the timetable.
Our first reformer class guide covers what to wear, what happens in a class and how you might feel the next day.
How do we support beginners?
Every class is instructor-led, and reformer classes have a maximum of 10 people, so your instructor can check your set-up and help you as you go. Our instructors have ongoing training in human movement and women's health. We teach you how to move well so you can take that into the rest of your life.
What if you're managing an injury or pain?
A physio assessment is the best place to start. We can work out what your body needs and which class suits you.
