What is healthy ageing?

Healthy ageing! A term we use all the time in the clinic and recently discovered this is an actual term coined by the World Health Organisation.

The World Health Organisation defines healthy ageing as:

‘The process of developing and maintaining functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age’.

It’s about optimising health, maintaining independence and quality of life as you get older and can involve any aspect of health from maintaining mobility through to mental and oral health.

As physiotherapists we are interested in improving and maintaining your physical function, so you can stay independent and continue doing the things you enjoy!

This might look like:

  • Improving your leg strength to stand up from a chair

  • Working with you to improve your pelvic floor function to help with incontinence

  • Physiotherapy treatment to help with your knee pain so you can continue your bushwalking

  • Balance training to prevent falls

  • Strength training so you can get up and down from the floor

We LOVE assisting our patients with healthy ageing and it is a core focus for our clinic!
